(t5!) My Year In Lists 2022: Everything Else

  1. Everything Else is a list of last year’s triumphs from the world of sports, film, TV, the internet, gaming, podcasts, and celebrities. My favorite out of all the non-music content I consumed in 2022.
  2.  The Everything Else list is exclusive to things released in 2022. We bought a Playstation 5 last summer, so I spent a chunk of the year playing games that are only available for that console such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ghost of Tsushima, both released in 2020. Both were excellent, but both are ineligible to make it to this year’s list. I had spent way too many days in a row playing Wordle and many other Wordle-adjacent online games, but Wordle came out in late 2021, so those games are ineligible as well.
  3.  A TV show in its entirety is only eligible if its inaugural season aired in 2022. Once a show has passed its first season, I only include single episodes. Having said that, you will see later that entire seasons of a TV show are eligible if the seasons are their own mini-series that are unrelated to each other. So for example, Adults Adopting Adults, which first aired in 2022, is eligible as a TV show, but the 23rd and 24th seasons of Law & Order: SVU, from episode 10 of season 23 to episode 9 of season 24, are only eligible as TV show episodes.
  4.  If an athlete, team, or celebrity has already been part of this list in past years, they are not eligible anymore, even if they have sustained their excellence for multiple years. I call that one the Connor McDavid Corollary.
  5.  I can’t include here anything that I haven’t experienced yet obviously. So movies like EOAll The Beauty and The Bloodshed, and Saint Omer, TV shows like Bad Sisters, This Is Going To Hurtand the latest season of For All Mankind, and games like Elden Ring, Neon White, and God of War: Ragnarok; they all won’t be making this list even if they are good enough to make it if I consumed them before I compiled this.
  6.  I am purposely excluding content from the Philippines because there might be an unconscious bias within me to champion (or in some cases, denigrate) these unfairly. However, I loved the obviously Wong Kar-Wai-inspired mini-series, Sleep With Me.
  7.  I want to warn you that some of the graphics and the text below are not spoiler-free, so be prepared for that.
  8.  And with that, every new discovery is just a reminder that they might be included in this year’s (t5!) My Year In List: Everything Else!

#050: Atlanta S04E10 – “It Was All A Dream”

“It Was All a Dream” is the series finale of the American comedy-drama television series Atlanta. It is the tenth episode of the fourth season and is the 41st overall episode of the series. The episode was written by series creator and main actor Donald Glover, and directed by executive producer Hiro Murai. It was first broadcast on FX in the United States on November 10, 2022. Earn, Al and Van try to support a black-owned sushi restaurant. Darius has a sensory deprivation session.

“True to form, the sendoff for the series was equal parts hilarious, scary, and offbeat. What more could I ask for from a series that’s trafficked in matching the black experience with the surreal?”
—Aaron Neuwirth, We Live Entertainment

#049: Jason Robertson

Jason Robertson (born July 22, 1999), nicknamed “Robo”, is an American professional ice hockey left winger for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League (NHL).

“What DeBoer [Robertson’s head coach] began his thought with is human nature. When we get an abundance of something, and start receiving it with ease, we forget context. We start taking it for granted. Over the duration of the points streak, Robertson has scored 20 goals. Over a broader period of time, Robertson potting goals has literally become a more common occurrence than the Stars taking the ice to play a game.”

#048: Jose Alvarado

Jose Alvarado (born April 12, 1998) is an American professional basketball player for the New Orleans Pelicans of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is nicknamed “Grand Theft Alvarado” due to his abilities in stealing.

“Alvarado secured a guaranteed NBA deal by doing the small things like pestering Chris Paul into 8-second violations. It’s that same attention to detail that will keep him on the court this season.”

#047: Reservation Dogs S02E10 – “I Still Believe”

Better Call Saul is an American crime and legal drama television series created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Part of the Breaking Bad franchise, it is a spin-off from Gilligan’s previous series, Breaking Bad (2008–2013), to which it serves as both a prequel and sequel. Better Call Saul premiered on AMC on February 8, 2015, and concluded on August 15, 2022, after six seasons consisting of 63 episodes. Saul falls back on his gift for elaborate cons. He persuades Jeff and a co-conspirator to shoplift thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing from a store at the mall where Saul works, a heist that succeeds only because Saul distracts the mall’s security officer from a bank of surveillance video screens with — what else?

Reservation Dogs opened up a new chapter in the history of Indigenous representation, and now that we’ve paved this space, there’s no way we’re going back.”

#046: The Northman

The Northman is a 2022 American epic historical action thriller film directed by Robert Eggers, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sjón. Based on the legend of Amleth, the film stars Alexander Skarsgård (who also produced), Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe. The plot centers on Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father. The film is heavily influenced by Norse mythology.

“It certainly feels authentic — there’s a sense of constant otherness to what we experience on the screen, yet with no sense of contrivance — and that’s what matters. Everything feels strange, savage, implacably other.”
—Mark Feeney, Boston Globe

#045: Better Call Saul S06E10 – “Nippy”

“I anticipate this standalone adventure will be polarizing, but it feels like a tribute to what Better Call Saul was at its best; a modestly scaled, yet rollicking look at a huckster in his element, fighting through feelings about his own shortcomings to harness his true powers. It also helped show that no matter how many times you change your name, you are who you are, and Jimmy McGill can call himself whatever he likes — he’ll always be Slippin’ Jimmy. “

#044: Klay Thompson

Klay Alexander Thompson (born February 8, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). A four-time NBA champion with the Warriors, he is a five-time NBA All-Star, a two-time All-NBA Third Team honoree and was once named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. He has also won gold medals with the United States national team on their 2014 World Cup team and 2016 Olympic team.

On January 8, 2022, Thompson announced he would make his return to the court on January 9 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his return, Thompson scored 17 points on 7-from-18 shooting in 20 minutes, as the Warriors defeated the Cavaliers 96–82. [In 2022] The Warriors won in six games, giving Thompson his fourth NBA Championship.

“According to Draymond Green, there’s a correlation between Thompson’s two-year absence and the Warriors’ two-year hiatus from the conference finals. To most people, Thompson’s shooting is what the Warriors missed the most. But, they also lost an irreplaceable competitive edge that Thompson brings.”

It is the first series to feature all Indigenous writers and directors, along with an almost entirely Indigenous North American cast and production team. The Rez Dogs go on a journey for Daniel.

“The film sets out to lure us into the retro fantasy so that we can share the shock of Alice’s awakening – which looks a lot like a mental breakdown, with Pugh acting in a much more realistic register than anyone else.”

Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, based on a story she wrote with Maria Bello. The film also stars Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.

“Prince-Bythewood celebrates these women warriors through impressive fight scenes that are athletic but realistic, eschewing the sort of CGI overkill that has run rampant in recent action films.”
—Tim Grierson, Screen International

#041: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander (/ʃeɪ ˈɡɪldʒəs/ SHAY GIL-jəs; born July 12, 1998), also known by his initials SGA, is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

“Gilgeous-Alexander just gets wherever he wants. Nothing feels forced. His movements are jagged and arrhythmic — hard to anticipate, harder to grasp. He seems to move fast and slow, and in every direction, at once. Tracking Gilgeous-Alexander is the NBA version of eating soup with a fork.”
